Nationals will destroy the Gippsland Lakes: Ingram

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has described a vote for the Nationals and Liberals as a vote to destroy the Gippsland Lakes.

“A vote for the National Party and the Liberal Party (as they are directing preferences to the Nationals) would be a vote for damming the Mitchell River and stopping environmental water into the lakes,” Mr Ingram said.

“A vote for the Nationals or Liberals is a mandate to destroy the Gippsland Lakes.

“I call on Liberal voters who are concerned with the Nationals anti-Gippsland Lakes policies not to follow the Liberal preference deals.

“In Melbourne, the Liberals are pandering to the Greens, yet in Gippsland East their preferences to the Nationals have the potential to destroy the lakes.”

Mr Ingram also called on voters in Gippsland East to reject the policies of the National Party.

“The Nationals have said that, if elected, they would they would dam the Mitchell River and stop environmental flows down the Thomson River,” he said.

“The Nationals’ candidate for Gippsland East has publicly stated that the Nationals wanted construction of a dam on the Mitchell River.

“The Nationals have also made statements that they want more money spent on the lakes. If they get to implement their policies, that money will be used for a wreath.

“We have come too far in the Gippsland Lakes restoration to turn the clock back to the Nationals’ knuckle-dragging antics.

“Over 70% of Gippslanders have said that the Gippsland Lakes are our most important regional asset.

“The Nationals clearly have no idea how economically important the Gippsland Lakes are.

“If you wish to protect and value the Gippsland Lakes, vote accordingly this Saturday,” Mr Ingram concluded.
