RELEASE FROM CRAIG INGRAM MP - MEMBER FOR GIPPSLAND EAST Issued: Tuesday 22 January 2008 |
Good decision on Next G switch off: Ingram
The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed the decision by the Federal Government to delay the closure of the CDMA network beyond 28 January, possibly to 28 April 2008.
“A report by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found the Next G footprint is similar to CDMA, but there are problems with coverage on handheld phones,” Mr Ingram said.
“On the 14 November 2007 I submission to the Federal Government that it was essential that the Next G network meets Gippsland’s requirements before the CDMA network is closed.
“I have been working with my constituents, local Telstra Country Wide representatives and providing relevant information to the Federal Government to ensure that the local coverage and Telstra-recommended Next G handsets were up to an acceptable standard.
“This decision was the only solution as major problems still exist with handsets, car kits and other Next G products.
“After raising the problem of Next G coverage on a number of occasions my office has been inundated with customer concerns and complaints over recent months.
” Mr Ingram said that all problems that have been referred to the local Telstra County Wide team have been dealt with properly and promptly, but the number of problems with handsets and related coverage issues are still being experienced
“Telstra now has time to solve the customer concerns and I encourage anyone still experiencing Next G issues to contact their Telstra agents or provide feedback on their Next G experiences to the government hotline by calling 1800 883 488,” Mr Ingram concluded.
